How to launch your freelance writing career when you're older. Makealivingwriting.com

Think you’re too old to launch a freelance writing career? Think again.

Have you been working a day job for decades? Are you an empty nester with a few gray hairs? You might think you’re too old to go freelance, but you’re not.

You can do this. Believe me. I know what it’s like to launch a freelance writing career when you’re older.

For more than 30 years, I worked in banking and law, and did a lot of writing. I dabbled with freelancing to make extra money, and thought it might be my path to retirement.

But that all changed when my employer went out of business.

Not quite old enough for Social Security, I wasn’t interested in starting over in another office. But I still needed an income, and I wanted more time and more freedom to enjoy life.

4 Top Obstacles Young Writers Face — and How to Beat Them

Young writers make these moves to overcome obstacles. Makealivingwriting.com

When you’re trying to build your freelance business in a sea of young writers and seasoned veterans, there’s a good chance it feels like you’re floundering. I know I did.

When I first started writing, I spent a ton of time worrying, procrastinating, and making excuses for why I couldn’t make a living doing what I loved. I wanted to break free from the corporate world and find success on my own terms.

For the first 6 months, I let my fear of being underqualified hold me back. As one of those young writers, I thought it might take me years to earn well as a freelancer. But I desperately wanted to find a way to speed up success.

I took courses, read freelance blogs like this one, and tried to learn everything I could about being a successful writer. The only problem was that I didn’t know how to get out of my own head and actually do the work.

Today, I make six figures, have a full client list, and teach other young writers how to overcome the same roadblocks I struggled with. As I’ve coached students in my Earn Big as a Young Writer course, I realized that my obstacles were very common.

Here are the top 4 obstacles young writers face (including me), and how to overcome them.

Ageism in Freelancing: Here’s How You Can Beat It

Ageism in freelancing: Here's how you can beat it. Makealivingwriting.com

Are you worried about ageism in freelancing? It’s a concern I hear from a lot of writers.

It’s not uncommon for writers to finally embark on their dream career after retiring or being laid off from a longtime job, or after several different corporate jobs. I also hear from journalists who’ve taken 10-20 years off to raise kids, and now they want to start getting assignments again.

But you worry that you’re “too old.” It’s too late for you. You’re obsolete. No one’s going to hire you.

If ageism in freelancing is your worry, I want to tell you it’s all lies.

I’ve been freelancing since late 2005, have owned an AARP card for several years now, and I’ve never been offered more lucrative projects than I’m seeing right now.
